TITLE: Fitness Tracker Wholesale: Reading a Quote Beyond Unit Price DESC: A wholesale unit price hides freight, duty, carton build and returns. Here is how buyers build a landed cost model before signing a PO. KEYWORDS: fitness tracker wholesale, landed cost fitness tracker, fitness tracker MOQ, fitness tracker duties, smart watch wholesale quote TAGS: fitness tracker, wholesale, landed cost, compliance, procurement Q: Why is a fitness tracker wholesale unit price not the real cost? A: The unit price covers the device and its packaging only. Freight, duty, importer registrations, carton configuration and the return rate you accept all sit outside it, and together they often move the effective cost per sellable unit by more than the negotiation on the device itself. Q: What should a buyer ask for before comparing two wholesale quotes? A: Ask for the carton dimensions and quantity per carton, the Incoterm, the document set per hardware revision, and the MOQ step for each customisation. Without those four items the quotes are not comparable, because you are comparing a device price against a delivered cost.

A wholesale quote for a fitness tracker usually arrives as a single number per unit, and that number is the least useful figure on the page. Two suppliers can quote the same device price and deliver very different costs per sellable unit once carton build, freight mode, duty and the return rate you have agreed to absorb are added. The comparison that matters is landed cost per unit that reaches a shelf in sellable condition, not the FOB number. This article sets out what a quote should disclose before you negotiate, and where a buyer should walk away from a supplier who will not disclose it.

Start with the Incoterm, not the price

A quote without an Incoterm is not a quote. EXW, FOB Shenzhen and DDP air or sea produce three different cost structures and three different risk positions. Under EXW you own the goods from the factory gate and arrange everything after that. Under FOB Shenzhen the supplier handles export clearance and delivery to the vessel or aircraft. Under DDP the supplier carries the goods to your named place, but you still hold the importer-of-record obligations in your market. Ask which one is being quoted, in writing, and ask for the same Incoterm from every supplier you are comparing. A supplier who quotes DDP without explaining who acts as importer of record is describing a service, not a compliant structure.

Carton build decides your freight

Freight is charged on volume or weight, whichever is greater, so the carton is a cost decision made at the factory. A device that ships 40 to a carton with a well-filled footprint costs less to move than the same device in a carton of 20 with air around it. Ask for the carton dimensions, the units per carton, the gross weight and the pallet configuration before you accept a unit price. If the supplier cannot supply those figures for the revision being quoted, the quote is provisional. Custom packaging changes the carton, so the MOQ step for it matters: at WingPhoenix custom packaging starts at 1,000 units while logo-only work starts at 500, and the standard MOQ is 500 units. The MOQ, sampling and lead times page sets out how those steps interact with sample lead times of 3-5 days for stock and 7-15 days for configured units.

Duty, registration and who carries them

Duty is the visible part. The invisible part is importer registration: WEEE, BattG in Germany, DEEE and Triman in France, plus EORI and VAT registration in the UK and EU. These sit with the importer, not the manufacturer, and they carry annual cost whether you sell one unit or ten thousand. Build them into your model per SKU, not per order. Battery shipments add a further layer: every battery order should carry the UN38.3 test summary and the safety data sheet, with the watt-hour rating printed on each unit. If a supplier offers a portable charger or power bank without a datasheet for the exact revision being quoted, treat the quote as incomplete rather than optimistic.

Returns and the sellable-unit denominator

Returns are where a wholesale quote quietly fails. A device that arrives with a flat battery, a scratched display or a pairing fault costs you the unit, the outbound freight, the return freight and the customer. The 2 % free replacement parts shipped with the order covers part of that, not all of it. Ask the supplier for the QC gate structure, because a factory running IQC, IPQC, FQC and OQC at AQL 2.5 major and 4.0 minor is inspecting at four points rather than one. The how we build and test page describes those gates in sequence. Then divide your total landed cost by the units you expect to sell, not the units you ordered.

Where the product scope changes the paperwork

The document set follows the product, not the order. A wrist device with skin contact needs EN 1811 nickel release evidence alongside CE RED (EN 300 328, EN 301 489, EN 62368-1) and FCC Part 15 B/C, with UKCA on request. If the packaging carries an age grading that places the item in toy scope, EN 71-1/-2/-3 and EN 62115 apply and must be booked with an accredited laboratory per build. Health metrics on any of these devices are wellness guidance, never diagnosis, and that wording belongs in your listing copy as well as the manual. For a range view, the AI wearables line and the Health & Wellness line show how the same platform carries different document sets, while the Fitness & Sports line covers the GPS variants. A GPS sport watch and a smart health ring may share a supplier but never share a compliance file.

  • Refuse a quote that names no Incoterm, however competitive the number looks.
  • Refuse a battery product quoted without a datasheet for the revision and a UN38.3 summary.
  • Refuse a claim that a certificate is already held; certification is a test scope booked per hardware revision with an accredited laboratory.
  • Refuse an MOQ below the published step for the customisation you actually need.
  • Refuse DDP terms where nobody has named the importer of record.

Build the landed cost model before you ask for a second quote, because the model tells you which questions to ask. Take the published MOQ, sample and lead-time structure from the resources page and the document list from the CE RED document checklist, then send both to your supplier and ask for a written response against each line. A supplier who answers line by line is quoting you a delivered product; one who answers with a unit price is quoting you a box.

Questions buyers ask

Why is a fitness tracker wholesale unit price not the real cost?

The unit price covers the device and its packaging only. Freight, duty, importer registrations, carton configuration and the return rate you accept all sit outside it, and together they often move the effective cost per sellable unit by more than the negotiation on the device itself.

What should a buyer ask for before comparing two wholesale quotes?

Ask for the carton dimensions and quantity per carton, the Incoterm, the document set per hardware revision, and the MOQ step for each customisation. Without those four items the quotes are not comparable, because you are comparing a device price against a delivered cost.
